Best of 2016 | Chicago Photographer

I still can’t believe that 2016 has come and gone. It seems like every year I get older, time slips by faster. Anyone else?! 2016 was particularly special because last spring after WPPI, I decided to start my photography business. That conference was the final boost I needed to make it happen. I quit being afraid and knew that if I didn’t do it now, I’d never do it. Starting a business is well, scary business, but it was beyond worth it. It was a surprisingly busy first year, which I was shocked and grateful for! God sent some amazing photography clients my way who trusted me with their most precious memories.

Looking back at some of my favorites here, I see some patterns in my work that hopefully will define my photographic style as the years go on. What were the things things I noticed? – Joy. Color. Light.- Sometimes it can be tempting to copy someone else’s photography style that you see on Instagram. You look at their work and think that yours will never match up or that you need to redefine your style altogether. While there is always room to grow and learn from other professionals (and your style may shift slightly over time) I am discovering it’s important to stick to what comes naturally to you. For me, that seems to be capturing real joy, finding beautiful colors, and using the best natural light that’s available to me.

I’ve compiled a few of my favorites from 2016, which was no easy task. Year 1 in photography business served families, 1st birthdays, weddings big and small, newborns, baby showers, engagements, head shots, senior portraits and just about everything in between. Oh, and if you see some new faces, that’s because I need to get better at this whole blogging thing. It’s on my goal list for 2017! Happy New Year everyone!
